Is today’s communication technology a bless or a curse? People can reach
us without limit either in space or in time. Via mobile phones, emails,
social networks and chat programmes we are non-stop accessable. We
fight with deadlines, competitors, budgets and bottom lines. Let's face it,
the modern workplace is stressful. As a result more people than ever are
suffering from sleep disorders, anxiety and even depression.
What we need is the ability to meet the mental demands of the day
without feeling over-stressed. Ayurveda literally means „the science of
long and healthy life”. You can regard it as deep well of wisdom from
where you can draw practical solutions for all your problems. Here are
some Indian ayurvedic stress management tips to help you cope better
with stress.
1. Reach out. Loneliness aggravates anxiety. Be in the company of
those you love. and take steps to rejuvenate your relationships. For
this is you will need to give more of yourself in terms of time,
energy and attention.
2. Take control of your responses. An instant way to calm jittery
nerves is to start breathing slow and deep. This brings down the
heart rate, blood pressure and muscle tension, sending a relaxation
response throughout your body and mind. It is important that you
keep the pace easy and the rhythm steady. Do this exercise at least
twice a day for 10 minutes each, and you will experience a new
sense of bliss.
3. Eat right. Ayurveda believes that you really are what you eat.
Choose foods that help you reduce free radicals. All fresh and
seasonal fruits, lightly-cooked and spiced vegetables, and whole
grains will repair your tired mind and body, carrying the goodness
down to the tiniest tissues.
4. Drink up. At least 8 glasses of water a day are essential for efficient
flushing out of disease-causing toxic matter from your system.
5. Exercise. Moderate exercise is a great way to de-stress. Yoga,
which is an integral part of Indian Ayurvedic healing, is a way to
exercise all parts of your body, while also soothing nerves and
balancing the mind. The Child’s Pose is a simple yoga asana you can
try when feeling less cheerful. How to do it? Kneel on your shins,
buttocks resting on your heels, knees together. With your arms at
your sides, palms up, bend from the hips and extend your upper
body over your knees. Resting on your thighs, bring your forehead
to the floor. Breathe deeply, hold for as long as is comfortable. Then
slowly sit up. You will feel relaxed and back to your balance!
6. Sleep Well. You may think it is easy to say so. But how one can
sleep well with all the troubles and stress disturbing him? Here is
what we suggest:
Try to go to bed early (no later than 10:00 p.m.).
Give yourself a massage every day with an ayurvedic oil — it
soothes the joints and nerves.
Favour peaceful, calming activities before bed (not watching
TV!).
Sip warm milk or herbal tea (eg. chamomile or lemon balm).
Meditate. Just 20 minutes, twice a day, is a great way to
balance mind and body, increase productivity, enhance
personal relations and indeed one's entire approach to life.
